Clearer Communications: How Do VoIP Phone Systems Work?

Resources & NewsMay 24, 2020Marketing

VoIP is an acronym for Voice Over Internet Protocol. It’s a term that you may have heard being used a lot, but what does it really mean?

You’ve probably used many different VoIP applications in the past without realizing it. It’s present in applications such as Skype and FaceTime, and it’s a technology that is becoming the norm in terms of communication.

What what are VoIP phone systems, and how can they be used in business communications and technology?

In this article, we’ll discuss VoIP phone technology and find out exactly how VoIP works.

What is a VoIP Phone System?

A VoIP phone system is one that uses the internet instead of a traditional phone line to provide you with phone service.

VoIP phone systems are easy to install and use; they’re scalable, and most importantly, they’re very economical.

Types of VoIP Phone Systems

There are two different types of VoIP phones. It is important to understand each type’s features and benefits so that you can select the right option for your business needs.

The two options are Hard Phones and Softphones.

  • Hard Phones This type of phone physically resembles a traditional hard-wired phone that you might usually use on your desk. Generally, this type of phone will have a speaker, microphone, touchpad, and a digital display that displays called ID. There are many features of this type of phone. These will include call forwarding, multi-party calls, and more. Because this type of phone uses digital data, it is possible that they can be used as video phones too.
  • Softphones This type of phone is a piece of software that is installed on a user’s computer or mobile phone. The user interface may look like a handset and have a caller ID and touchpad. If you are using this type of phone with a computer, you will need to connect a microphone and speaker. Softphones will also have similar additional features such as multi-party call handling, voicemail, along with the ability to set up automatic call handling.

How VoIP Phone Systems Work

VoIP takes your voice and converts it into a digital signal. This signal is then sent via the internet. In the case of a VoIP phone system, this digital signal can be sent to a non-VoIP phone number.

VoIP calls can be made on a variety of devices.

Because VoIP uses data packets and sends the data over the internet rather than making use of copper phone wire, it makes the calls far less expensive to make. This provides your business with some genuine cost-savings.

Setting up Your VoIP Phone System

Now that you understand VoIP phone Systems, isn’t it time that you put this technology into action? With great cost savings associated with VoIP, you could replace all of your existing phone technology and easily improve your efficiency.
